EarthLink Network TotalAccess
Version 1.1
11/17/95
Release Notes
Installation Notes
To install all components of TotalAccess for Macintosh you need:
- Any Macintosh with a 68020, 68030, or 68040 processor
or
Any Power Macintosh except models 7200, 7500, 8500, and 9500
- System 7.0 or greater
- 2.5 megabytes of free memory required (see below)
- 7 megabytes of free disk space
- A 9600 baud or faster modem
- A credit card (for a new account)
Memory Requirements
If when registering or retrieving a TotalAccess account you get an error message
indicating "There is not enough memory to install the Internet Tools" you can try
the following steps to increase the amount of free memory on your system.
- quit TotalAccess
- quit all other running applications
- use virtual memory (set with the "Memory" Control Panel)
- remove system extensions and control panels.
- after making these changes, restart your system (select "Restart" from the
Finder
"Special" menu)
These measures should free up enough memory to complete the
installation/registration process.
General Controls Settings
The Desktop setting "Show Desktop when in background" should be enabled. This is
the default setting so normally you won't have to change it. To enable this
setting, use the "General Controls" control panel. If this setting is not
enabled it may appear that Registration & Utilities "halts" during the account
registration process. If you experience this, select Registration & Utilities
from the Application Menu at the far right side of the Menu Bar at the top of the
screen. The registration process will then proceed normally.
Modem Settings
TotalAccess comes with a standard modem list as seen in the Modem screen within
Registration & Utilities. If your modem is not listed, or is selected but still
won't initialize, you can set a custom modem initialization string by selected
Advanced...
We will be revising and improving the modem list over the next few weeks, so if
you have problems with your modem it is very important to us. Please send any
modem information to tamac@earthlink.net, and don't forget to include you modem
name and the initialization string you used.
Open Transport
This release of TotalAccess does not support Open Transport, Apple's recently
released "replacement" for MacTCP. Open Transport comes standard with all 7200,
7500, 8500,
and 9500 PowerPC systems. Due to the nature of the systems (they have a PCI bus
structure, as opposed to NuBus) they cannot run MacTCP.
If you have a Macintosh running Open Transport, contact EarthLink Network for
assistance configuring it manually. We are currently working to fully support
Open Transport in the next release of TotalAccess.
MacTCP
TotalAccess will perform auto-configuration of MacTCP. It will first backup, then
modify the MacTCP Prep file in your Preferences folder.
If MacTCP is currently configured for something else (such as another PPP driver
or local network) you will need to restore you settings for your original
software to work again. To do this, copy the file "MacTCP Prep Backup" in your
Preferences directory to "MacTCP Prep".
PPP
For your actual Internet connection, TotalAccess installs a PPP driver called
"TotalAccess PPP", located in your Extensions folder. This file must remain in
the Extensions directory and "TotalAccess PPP" must be selected on the MacTCP
control panel for TotalAccess to continue functioning.
It is possible for other PPP drivers installed in MacTCP to conflict with
TotalAccess. If you are experiencing problems getting the TotalAccess PPP driver
to load, try removing other PPP drivers from your Extensions folder. This
includes:
• MacPPP
• InterPPP
• Any other driver with the word PPP in it
Technical Support
If you experience difficulties while using the TotalAccess software you may
contact EarthLink Technical Support at 1-800-395-8410 or via email at
support@earthlink.net.
Bug Reports
Please send bug reports to EarthLink R&D at tamac@earthlink.net. Please
include your Macintosh model, modem type, and any other pertinent information.
If the bug is reproducible please describe the steps required to produce the
error.
